3 Things #4: Shin splints, Emotional dysregulation, A quote

Hello there,

Here are 3 Things about body, mind and life that I’ve explored this week…

Shin Splints – A kick in the shin.

As a runner, shin splints are something that I have had on and off, usually it plays up when my calf is tight.

Disclaimer: I am not a qualified health professional in this area and you should always start there.

Here are a few things I’ve used that I credit with keeping me on the road. I don’t think there is one that I’d give more credit than another, but together I find they work.

  • Stretching your calves, hold the stretch for 1-2 minutes. Click here for link.
  • Toe taps: sit down and tap your feet on the ground, alternating left/right/left/right, do this for as long as possible a couple of times, I find this helps before running too as it warms the area up, you can do this whenever you want throughout the day.
  • Walk up and down on your toes and then your heels (you may look odd).
  • Generally stretch and strengthen your legs: Lunges, squats, glute bridges, calf raises (especially). Aim for 2-3 times a week.
  • Rub some deep heat/tiger balm/massage oil on your shins then use the handle of a spoon and run it up and down your shins for a minute or two.
  • Trainers: Avoid flat footed fashion trainers, get some cushioned ones. If your running shoes are old, it’s probably time for new ones. I love Hoka Clifton’s, a podiatrist recommended them to me for ankle impingement and I’ve never looked back.

Emotional Dysregulation

Emotional dysregulation refers to the difficulty that comes with managing your emotional responses. Think disproportionate reactions, difficulty calming down, mood swings, overwhelm, stress and relationship issues.

I know my emotions can get in the way, impacting relationships, work, how I feel about myself, sleep and food choices.

Being emotionally regulated is about being able to bring emotions up or down to a baseline where I can be my best self — content, productive, and good to be around.

Some things I’ve found that help me are:

  • Sauna/Cold water exposure, there is emerging science about this, read here for more info
  • Exercise
  • Breathwork
  • Writing this article (its creative and gets me out of my head).
  • Dogs (petting/walking/playing/even watching videos!)

Life – A quote

Here’s a quote to reflect on — I read it this week in The Road Less Travelled by Scott Peck

“Is it any better to do the right thing for the wrong reasons than the wrong thing for the right reasons?”
